Scientific advice

Social and Behavioural Science

Our social and behavioural science work focuses on understanding the root causes of terrorism and examining ways to prevent it. In particular we research political violence, who becomes involved in extremist activities and why. We develop appropriate interventions at national, regional and local level. Our work also informs initiatives to address public perceptions of the threat and aims to ensure government and emergency service operational responses are publicly supported and understood.

Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Science

We provide expert scientific advice on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) materials, in order to identify the Home Office’s CBRN research needs which are delivered through the CBRN S and T Programme. Our other work includes: coordinating CBRN-related modelling activity across Government; producing national guidance on the required level of decontamination in the event of a release of CBR materials; and guidance for the emergency services on suitable detection, identification and modelling equipment.

Explosives Science

Explosives research is another important part of our work. We also provide advice, steer project work, and coordinate explosives work across Government.
