Science and innovation

Science and technology fighting crime

Science is critical to our efforts to combat the evolving threat of terrorism.

Our approach is fully explained in our science and technology strategy for countering international terrorism.

This updates the 2007 security and counter-terrorism science and innovation strategy.

What do we mean by science and technology?

We mean any knowledge and technology that can be used to strengthen our ability to combat terrorists. This includes the physical sciences, engineering, social sciences, statistics, economics and operational research.

We draw on a wide spectrum of research and innovation to enhance our understanding of, for example, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear material; explosives; Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and social and behavioural science.

Who is involved?

Our work is wide-ranging, and involves numerous departments and agencies with successful histories in combating terrorism and furthering scientific research.

We also work closely with international colleagues, partners in the private sector and experts in academia.
