Types of keys and their uses

A key is any data that allows protected information to be put into an intelligible form.

A key is any:

  • code
  • password
  • algorithm
  • other data that allows protected electronic information to be accessed
  • any data that allows protected information to be put into an intelligible form

All manner of material can constitute a key, including:

  • words or phrases
  • numbers written on any form of paper or plastic cards bearing numbers
  • electronic chips or magnetic strips
  • all forms of removable or fixed media for storing electronic data
