Legislation

Current legislation

The legislative framework for preventing, protecting and pursuing terrorists and those who support terrorist organisations is complex.

Terrorism is a crime and associated activities such as identity fraud, even if it cannot be proven as having terrorist motives, can be prosecuted.

This section focuses on the key pieces of legislation that are administered by the Home Office. The Acts that give the UK Government its chief powers in combating terrorism are:

  • The Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT)
  • The Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 (ATCSA)
  • Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005
  • The Terrorism Act 2006
