The G8 is an informal group of 8 countries UK, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, France and USA. The EU is not part of the G8 but attend meetings as observers.
The Chair of the G8 rotates every calender year. On 1 January 2005 the UK took over the G8 Presidency.
Heads of States meet annually to discuss and deal with major economic and political issues, This is known as the G8 Summit.
G8 Ministers for Justice and Home Affairs usually meet once every year.
Russia hold the current chair of the G8.
