Counter-terrorism strategy

Business

In collaboration with Cabinet Office, the Home Office is working to improve its communication with the business sector.

In particular, improvements are being made in terms of how we communicate with businesses outside the critical national infrastructure.

In October 2004 the Home Office established a group to steer this work, bringing together the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI), the Civil Contingencies Secretariat (Cabinet Office), the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), and the London Resilience Forum.

The group does not restrict its work solely to counter-terrorism issues, but instead considers many general principles of business continuity planning.

Focus of work

This work is based around four main areas:

  • coordinating information: providing one place where businesses can go for information on security issues
  • streamlining advice and guidance: providing one website, phone number, and address businesses can contact for advice and information
  • coordinating major event communications: taking and making opportunities to explain the government's perspective
  • enhancing credibility and confidence: linking with business organisations and local and regional representatives

Still developing

Recently the group has expanded to include the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). It has also:

  • identified channels for communicating with business
  • started to put in place the arrangements that will allow these channels to be used
  • agreed ways of compile the information and guidance needed to create one clear source of government information

The group has agreed on a 12-month schedule to complete the work.
