Counter-terrorism strategy

Preventing extremism

Following the attacks in London in July 2005, seven community-led working groups were set up under the banner of 'Preventing Extremism Together' (PET) to develop practical recommendations for tackling violent extremism.

To secure local input into these recommendations, Ministers visited nine towns and cities with large Muslim populations to discuss how government could work in partnership with them to prevent extremism.

1000 British Muslims took part in these consultations, and their comments were fed back in to the community-led working groups.

Report and response

The working groups published their report in November 2005. The report and the Government's response are available on the Department for Communities and Local Goverment (CLG) website.

CLG are responsible for tackling disadvantage in all communities, and for working in partnership with them to improve their capacity to fight extremism.
