Counter-terrorism strategy
Border security
All UK ports have a port policing strategy in place.
The port policing strategy will involve screening passengers and freight for illegal goods or equipment that could be used for terrorist activity. Freight will also be checked for signs of human trafficking.
The government has been strengthening the UK’s border controls in recent years, and it now has extensive powers for counter-terrorist policing at ports.
On this issue, the Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence Directorate works closely with:
- Immigration and Nationality Directorate (new window)
- HM Revenue and Customs (new window) which has responsibility for border controls
Radiation screening
Radiation screening equipment has now been introduced at ports and airports, and UK-bound goods vehicles and passengers are routinely screened for signs that they've carried or handled radioactive materials.
