Detection and identification of materials
Detection and identification of chemical, biological and radioactive materials and substances is a demanding and dangerous job.
Detection & identification training and equipment
The emergency services who carry out this work are trained in the necessary equipment and procedures.
The detection equipment available fills all necessary requirements, but as technology advances it may need to be improved. The Home Office are working with the emergency services to develop improvements in equipment to detect, monitor and identify chemical, biological and radioactive materials.
This work is based on developing a statement of requirements – that is, what the emergency services need a piece of equipment to do – and deciding what is possible now and in the future.
Detailed information about detection equipment is not given out as it may be useful to terrorists.
