About the CBRN resilience programme

The Home Office leads the government's resilience programme.

The resilience programme - collectively known as 'CBRN' - brings together experts from across government and the private sector, was established in 2001.

Its main aim is to:

  • ensure that, in the event of a terrorist incident the response from all concerned will be quick and effective, so that lives can be saved and the impact on property and the environment minimised

Considerable progress

Since it began, the programme has made considerable progress in increasing the UK's ability to respond to a CBRN incident.

Improvements include:

  • better personnel training
  • improved detection and decontamination equipment
  • more effective personal protective equipment (PPE)
